Inconsequential AI stuff

March 8, 2006

So feel free to skip this entry if you aren’t into AI! πŸ˜€

This week, I am all about the clichéd “song choice” criticism.

Katharine: I liked her for the first time this week and she didn’t make me grind my teeth with her chipper bordering-on-fake dorky self. Could be because I love Aretha Franklin so much and she didn’t just stand there trying to look all cutesy while singing. I felt like I saw for the first time the singer that she could be, able to engage the audience and really make them feel it. Her voice and control is undeniable, so she only needed to show she can engage.

Mandisa: Love her. She’s got more performance sense than anyone else on the show. Regardless of personal tastes, the very best kind of song to choose for this show is something that 1) is at least vaguely familiar to the audience; 2) has one slower part with one upbeat part so the song doesn’t feel monotonous; 3) has an line or two that you can really blow the pipes on; 4) makes people want to get up and clap or dance. Mandisa is either really smart or just naturally likes this type of music, so maybe I shouldn’t give her too much credit, but when it works for you, it does. And she’s sung such a variety of music that it’s hard to say what type of music is her type. So I tend to think she’s smart.

Ayla: I think she’s really great, but she’ll never get close to touching the winner’s circle if she doesn’t pick a song like I described above (she hit 2 out of 4, but it’s important to hit all points, I think) and if she doesn’t find a style that suits her and makes her feel comfortable. I wish she’d take off all that makeup and put away the tall shoes and come out in a kick-ass pair of jeans and stomping boots and sing something less… pretty and performance-y. Something… gritty, yet soulful & beautiful. I am not sure what. I really like her and think that she, above everyone else, has the ability to surprise me with how much she could evolve. But right now, she’s all great voice and nothing else. She doesn’t have the ability to bring people to their feet, to really pull them into the music like it’s breaking your heart, right now, right on the stage.

Paris: Why are she such an old lady? And if she is gonna be such an old lady, can she please go back to the type of old lady that loves Billie Holiday? Please? Because her audition songs were so awesome. Her voice sounds like a saxophone. Make use of it. Man, could you imagine a Paris & Elliot jazzy duet? Yum. But seriously, she’s got mad talent, so why is she boring me to death?

Melissa: This isn’t about song choice. I think she isn’t going to win, but I think she’ll be eliminated too early. Like this week. I think her voice is great and the tone is interesting and pleasing to listen to. I think she even chose a great song. But I don’t see her potentially making the leap like Ayla could later in the competition. I do think she’s right about getting shafted for screen time, but she won’t make it past top 10 at best. Also: stop dressing like a college girl on Spring Break. It makes your unique voice seem generic as a whole package, which sucks. Don’t cheapen your talent.

Lisa: Wonderful. Also, snoozy. Too old, like Paris, except Lisa is more confident, middle-aged woman who has finally really found herself rather than old lady with old lady tastes. I have no idea what would suit her. She really is great but so Star Search. Who would go to her concerts? I have no idea.

Kellie: I can’t stand her singing. She doesn’t change up the dynamics during the song, so it’s all at the same volume, same intensity all throughout, and it bores me. Her voice is decent, but probably near the bottom of the current group. The thing that is supposed to make me love her is her personality, but if she were someone I knew in person, I’d leave the room as soon as she opened her mouth. So utterly annoying. And it’s NOT because of the country aspect of things. It’s just that she seems to fake with her “I am so adorable but I don’t know it” schtick and it makes me gag. It’s like all her life, people had told her how cute she is and she noticed that they like it better when she pretends she doesn’t know, so she’s always pretending. Strange, because her male counterpart, Bucky, no longer has my intense disdain, which is why I don’t think it’s the country aspect of things. He’s managed to grow on me, not enough to root for, but enough not to glaze over when he’s on screen.

Kinnik: Sorry to say good bye, Ms. Producer Designated Cannon Fodder. It’s a shame because you are pretty good but things never seem to fall together for you. She reminds me of the older blonde woman (not Suzie) from Rock Star: INXS who made it pretty far into the competition, in that she’s reasonably skilled and good at both the singing and performance aspects, but you listen to them and you never think of gasping at how great they are. Or remember what they did 10 minutes later.

I guess that’s all of them. My guess is Kinnik and Melissa will go home but I wish it was Kinnik and Kellie, who is FAR less talented than Melissa (also designated cannon fodder). I agree with Becky about Lisa. She stirs up admiration but there is no soul in her singing, which makes it feel like that Sharon Apple or whatever singing robot it was in Macross Plus. Or maybe it was not Macross Plus. She’s an empty, hollow, great-sounding recording for me. The person at risk of a shock boot would be Ayla. I hope not.

Anchorwoman

March 8, 2006

So the person who did my makeup consultation sent me the “before & after” pic today, so I passed it around to Uyen, Lindsi, my sister, and my mom.

The concensus seems to be:

  • Skin looks really great
  • Blush looks great, but actually too subtle
  • Lip color is nice
  • Lashes look great (my sis said it should be fuller)
  • Eye makeup is just not right for me
  • General look is too “old”

It feels like the eye makeup makes me look like an Asian woman trying to look like a white woman. I simply have no eye crease, but the makeup artist tried to make the appearance of one, and in my opinion, that’s not the best way to deal with the situation. I don’t want to pretend like I have a crease where I don’t. Ok, so I want to pretend to have mega lashes even though I only have puny ones. Heh. Even though I think she’s a fantastic makeup artist and really delivered on the natural looking coverage that stayed on for hours (literally 6 hours, with no smudging or smearing or caking), I think I might forfeit my deposit and try to find someone else.

Frankly, I want to look like a Korean pop star, not like Connie Chung, which is who Seppo said my makeup reminded him of, effectively sealing the deal. Heh.

kimchihead

March 8, 2006

Way back when, in April of 1997, in my second blog-like entry ever, I “blogged” about a guy whose website was called The Twisted Kimchihead. A few weeks ago, I started subscribing to a blog linked by some other site. I think it had to do with activism or food. He covers both, so I’m not sure which reason I subscribed. Anyway, I just read an entry from his feed and realized that his blog is called The Kimchihead and that he is in fact the same Twisted Kimchihead that I “met” 9 years ago.

Weird.

Why Geeks Rule

March 6, 2006

Ok, some geeks definitely don’t rule. But I’m talking about the closet hottie, the off-the-beaten-path cutie who was never insanely popular with the ladeez (or guys).

Why do they rule so much? A couple of friends and I have discussed how our respective S.O.s, despite their obvious attractiveness and overall coolness, aren’t considered the regulation studs that everyone and their grandmas pursued relentlessly, and why it’s better that way. It’s great because usually, these guys* are just as good looking as the so-called hotties (and sometimes, even better), but because of some stupid social dynamic or an intrinsic shyness, they don’t have big heads over how awesome they are. And they don’t even know why we — the ones that can see through the stupid social blindness that seems to inflict most people — think they are so blazing hot. Which in turn generally makes them nicer because they haven’t been able to coast through life on their looks alone — not to say being incredibly good-looking makes you mean or anything like that, because that’s not true either.

Anyway.

There’s really no point to this post. It was just a random thought about how great it is that we think our S.O.s are awesome + hot + humble/clueless about previously mentioned awesomeness and hotness.

Note: I say “guys” because I am a straight female and so were the friends I was talking to at the time, but this applies to the women as well.

Yeah, yeah, I’m sure half of you have already seen it, but this is for the other half who haven’t yet. πŸ™‚

ETA: Looks like it’s been pulled from YouTube. I’m sure you’ll find a way to watch it nonetheless.

weakened/weekend

March 4, 2006

I don’t know why, but my sleep pattern has really gone through a huge disruption recently. Last night, I went to bed at 11pm, but couldn’t fall asleep until 1am, then I woke up abruptly at 5, tried unsuccessfully to fall asleep until 6:30, then finally gave up and picked up a book to read. As a result, I feel really tired. The night before was problematic too.

A bug I had been obsessed with getting resolved for work has been resolved! You’d think all I worked on were bugs, since I only really mention work when I get stuck on a bug or am over it.

I called around to see who would replace our Civic’s headlight assembly and for how much, but the cheapest place is not open over the weekend, so that will have to wait. Again. Sigh. The other places are prohibitively expensive. Bleh.

Today, I had a makeup consultation because I know as much about makeup as a 12 year old boy, even though I have been trying to educate myself these recent months. I alternated between thinking I looked great and wondering if I was wearing too much makeup. I think I’ll ask the makeup person to use less when we really go for it, but over all, I was very happy with it.

Seppo took off this morning with his cousin and Joe to pick up some more people to head over to Tahoe for his bachelor party. They left at 10 in the morning, and by the time he called me to let me know he had arrived safely, it was already 6pm! 8 hours of driving to go what would usually take 3-4 hours. Yikes.

So yeah, I met Seppo’s cousin for the first time on Thursday. He’s really awesome and funny, and clearly so fond of Seppo that it would have been difficult for us not to get along. πŸ™‚ There is a clear family resemblance in their profiles, but not in very much else. We watched “Fever Pitch” in fast forward to find the 5-6 scenes you can see him in the movie (he does background work). There is a great shot where you see him dead center of the screen for a good part of the scene. It’s awesome!

I went over to Uyen’s for dinner (delicious lo mein, which I had three helpings of, for the love of monkey) and stayed and chatted until about half an hour ago. Apparently, she and Lindsi and Dara are going shopping tomorrow for bachelorette party stuff, which only puts the fear of God in me. As for me, I am going to take a very long walk with Mobi in the morning then heading over to have lunch with Holly before going to see Brokeback Mountain together. Fun! I am hoping to keep Sunday completely free to clean and go grocery shopping. I want to make my braised short ribs for dinner, but for the first time ever, in a pressure cooker (an early wedding gift, for which I am buying thank you cards). Woo!

one

March 1, 2006

Only one girl/woman on AI has it all (for me): great looks, charming & sweet personality, great vocals, and a powerful presence.

That woman is Mandisa. Everyone else put me to sleep tonight. Sheesh. Try not to be so boring, ladies.

Melissa and Ayla pleasantly surprised me tonight, but not enough to really care. Someone take annoying Kellie Pickler off my tv screen.

packed full

February 27, 2006

This past weekend was insanely busy.

Friday night: Girls’ night at Becky’s. We ate a lot of great food (the cheeses were so very tasty) and generally hung out and made big dorks of ourselves. πŸ™‚ It was hysterically fun. Nominally, it was supposed to be makeup night, but we never got around to that. Whatever happens at girls’ night stays in girls’ night, so I can’t say anything. Please kill me for writing that phrase. Heh.

Saturday: I drove into the city for my friend’s bridal shower. She’s getting married one week before me in Vegas then going on her honeymoon right away, so neither of us will get to attend the other’s wedding, so I really wanted to make it out to see her. I was only able to attend the brunch/bridal shower event of three (dinner and dancing was also on the agenda for the day), but it was so nice. A bunch of people came in from out of town, including her bridesmaids and sister. It brought together her various friends from different circles, yet the group was small and intimate enough that we all felt like we were finally putting faces to the names we had heard all along. We played a bunch of silly pre-wedding games and had fantastic tea at Lovejoy’s Teahouse. We wrote advice on little cards and made a scrapbook with polaroids we took with her. I also got to see a few people I had lost touch with from my old job, so that was nice too. Bonus! πŸ™‚

We also did some grocery shopping at the Korean market, where I was able to get the info about their catering, since my mom wants to have some Korean appetizers at the reception as well. Mission accomplished.

Sunday: Seppo and I drove out to go to Nordstrom’s Rack and Men’s Wearhouse. I bought some cheap-o white shoes (I am thinking about using the shoes borrowed from Uyen anyway, since hers are so much cuter) then caught up with Seppo who was getting measured for a tux. After that, we were supposed to meet up with Becky and Uyen who were also at the same mall shopping, but our car’s battery had died. Luckily, we had jumpers with us and Uyen drove over Becky’s car and gave us a jump, while Becky ever-so-patiently waited for us where she was saving us a place at the eatery we were going to meet at, since Seppo and I had interrupted both their meals. Thanks guys!
